Meet Our Team

At ScoreBuilder Test Prep, we are a small team of local tutors who serve the community in North County San Diego.  We love where we live and the work we do.  Learn a bit more about us below.

Matthew Stroup - President & Professional Tutor

Matthew Stroup is the Founder and President of ScoreBuilder Test Prep.  Matthew has worked with students in one-on-one test prep for over 6,000 hours for a wide variety of standardized tests and academic subjects. Matthew prides himself on delivering exceptional results and providing top-tier customer service.  He loves helping students across North County San Diego achieve to their full potential!

While pursuing dual degrees in Biology and Economics at Johns Hopkins University and a Masters in Biotechnology at Georgetown University, Matthew called on his academic roots and began tutoring professionally in Washington D.C.  As a math and science nerd, a rarity in the tutoring community, Matthew not only worked with students on SAT and ACT, but also guided students through academic courses, SAT Subject Tests, and AP Exams. Before long, he fell in love with sharing his passion for learning with his students.

In 2014, Matthew decided to leave Washington D.C. and move to sunny San Diego.  He founded ScoreBuilder Test Prep upon seeing there was a great need for a high-quality, customized, one-on-one test prep and academic tutoring in North County San Diego.  He knows that each student has unique needs and a flexible, personalized tutoring program delivers the best results.  Matthew’s love of learning and passion for teaching allows him to immediately connect with his students and make the test preparation process swift, effective, and enjoyable.

In his free time, Matthew loves to stay active and can probably be found at the beach surfing, scuba diving, or spearfishing.  He also enjoys traveling the world in his time off (31 countries so far!) and is always open to recommendations for his next big trip.

Michael Stroup - Professional Tutor

Born and raised in Washington D.C., Michael attended Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, where he graduated with a major in Marketing and Entrepreneurship.  During his time at Georgetown, Michael founded a successful on-campus startup that created locally focused apparel.  He was also actively involved in peer-to-peer tutoring, helping other students with Finance, Marketing, and Economics.  After graduating, Michael joined a clothing startup in D.C., where he worked in a variety of roles.   In 2015, Michael, following his entrepreneurial spirit, decided to move to San Diego and join ScoreBuilder Test Prep.

Since joining the company, Michael has become very popular among students, parents, and family pets (dogs are his favorites) and has now tutored over 2,500 hours in private and small group sessions.  His friendly, laid-back style makes tutoring sessions enjoyable for his students.  But do not be fooled, he will not let his students get away with not putting in the time and effort necessary to see improvements.  Michael knows the key to success on the ACT and SAT is to be comfortable and confident on test day.  This requires not only being

familiar with the concepts featured on the test but also understanding the proper test-taking strategies and techniques.  Michael works to fine-tune each student's techniques and knowledge of the test, so his students are able to achieve the best possible scores on test day.

In his free time, you can find Michael at the beach, usually falling off of bright yellow longboard.  He also enjoys golfing, hiking, traveling, and listening to podcasts.
