Before the First Tutoring Session...
We will schedule the first tutoring session at a convenient time. As full-time tutoring, we are available in the afternoons and evenings for tutoring sessions during weekdays and on certain times on the weekends as well. Over the summer, we meet with students in the morning, afternoons, and evenings on weekdays. We are fairly flexible with scheduling, so the meeting time can vary week-to-week for students who have changing schedules. In general, we work with students for 1-hour or 1.5-hour sessions. Longer sessions are available as well upon request.
For any standardized test prep, we recommend that students complete a diagnostic practice test before the first session. This test will give us some baseline scores and will help us get a better idea of the student's strengths and weaknesses. We will provide practice tests to any student who chooses to take the test prior to their first session. If the student has recently taken the test and has scores, those scores can serve as the diagnostic test.
At the First Tutoring Session...
Your tutor will bring all of the ScoreBuilder Test Prep materials to the student, so all students need is a pencil and a calculator. For SAT and ACT Prep, we will provide a custom-written SAT or ACT notebook that covers the topics, strategies, and test-taking tips that students will need to learn for success on test day. All practice tests and test prep materials are included in the tutoring programs.
During the first session, we also take a few minutes to get to know the students and establish a rapport. We will be spending a decent amount of time together throughout this process, so we like to ask students to tell us about themselves, their hobbies, and their academic strengths and weaknesses. This conversation will quickly transition to discussing the test they will be taking. There are many preconceived notions about these tests, so we want to make sure students have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have about the test or how we are going to help them improve.
After the initial conversation, which usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, we will jump into the actual tutoring. At the end of the session, we will assign homework based on what we covered in the session. Students can expect an average of 2-3 hours of homework per week.
Beyond the First Tutoring Session...
On average, students work with their tutor for 10-15 total hours for SAT and ACT Test Preparation. That being said, no two students are the same. We work with a wide range of students, from some just beginning their test preparation to others who have already completed a full test prep course and are looking to maximize their results. As a result, there is no set program or minimum hour limit for the ScoreBuilder SAT and ACT Prep.
Students preparing for SAT Subject Tests, AP Tests, or Academic Tutoring will often work with tutors for a shorter period of time. Of course, this will depend on each student's specific needs.
For our pricing, we simply charge an hourly rate, so you pay as you go. We do not lock you into package deals and have you buy more sessions than you need. If a student is ready after three or four hours in sessions, we will be the first ones to tell you. If we need to add in a few more sessions to get ready for the upcoming test, we will let you know. We pride ourselves on always giving honest feedback about what students need from us and can always custom-build a tutoring package to fit your budget.
Our primary goal is to help students improve their confidence and build better scores, so please contact us to develop a test preparation program that will work for you!
